Daniel Schwartz
Vice Provost for Academic Operations
Dr. Dan Schwartz is presently the Vice Provost for Academic Operations, but has held a variety of roles since arriving at UConn in 2010. An accomplished researcher and faculty member in the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology, Dr. Schwartz’s research focuses on the development of experimental and computational tools to discover and understand patterns in protein sequences. Software developed in the Schwartz Lab has been cited over 1800 times and has had over 40,000 users from approximately 130 countries.
Prior to his role in the Provost’s office, Dr. Schwartz served as the Director of the Center for Open Research Resources and Equipment (COR²E) from 2015 to 2023, a center with a mission to enhance research at UConn by providing access to state-of-the-art research equipment. Under Dr. Schwartz’s leadership the COR²E user base and revenues more than doubled and the center was highly successful in obtaining grants for high-end instrumentation totaling over $5M. In 2017 Dr. Schwartz founded Squared Labs, a primarily undergraduate software development and design team that has built high-value university web sites/tools and also led to the spin out of a company, Lincus, wherein Dr. Schwartz served as CEO. Most recently the Squared Labs team has been integrated into the Internal Insights and Innovation group which supports software development for faculty research and the institution more broardly, but critically, the unit also provides students with practical experiences that align with their career aspirations.
From 2020 to 2023 Dr. Schwartz additionally served as the Executive Director of Strategic Analytics and Initiatives in the Office of the Vice President for Research. His efforts in that role to promote data science and entrepreneurship at UConn’s Stamford campus led to the formation of the Stamford Data Science Initiative, and importantly reflect his ongoing dedication to leveraging his expertise and leadership skills to drive positive change and growth within the university community.
Dr. Schwartz received his bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering from Cornell and his doctorate in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard.
